MA428: Introduction to Numerical Analysis II
This is the second half of a one-year sequence
courses that introduce you to the wonderland of numerical analysis.
- General syllabus about this
one-year sequence includes the following subjects (not necessarily in
order.)
- The emphasis in MA427 is on
the nonlinear problems, whereas the emphasis in MA428 is on the linear
problems.
- So that you can see the
full spectrum of computational techniques, it is strongly recommended that
you take the full year course.
Reading materials:
- Many textbooks for the sole
subject of numerical linear algebra are available. We recommend the
following list as general references some of which might be slightly more
advanced than others. Talk to me if you have specific topics in mind.

Edition, by Stoer and Bulirschs.

Numerical Linear Algebra, by Trefethen and Bau.

Grading
Policy:
- final grade= (30%
homework) + (50% projects) + (20% final exam)
- Homework must be done by individuals and turned in on time. No
particular format is required. Numeric grades are given on the basis of
completion and correctness
- Projects may be worked on and turned in by study groups of up
to 2 people per group. All group members receive the same grade.

It is recommended that all computer projects be
carried out by Matlab.

Each project report should contain four
sections: Introduction, Mathematical Theory, Computer Program/Test, and
Discussion.

Projects are evaluated on the basis of
completion and creativity.
- Final exam is a written, 3-hour, in-class, comprehensive test
on your familiarity with all topics discussed in class.
